Channa dhal or Chana dhal, dahl, dal is the smaller brown Desi chick pea which has been split and polished. They taste sweeter than the whole chickpea, are lower in the glycaemic index, and can be used in place of chickpeas in any recipe such as hummus dips. The more common larger white chick pea is the Kabuli type, also known as garbanzo, often available as whole chick pea.

Cook 1 cup of channal dhal to 2-3 cups of water, boil for 2 mins then simmer for up 30-40 minutes or until soft or as firm as you like. No need to soak before cooking.
