How do sunscreens work?
Sunscreens protect the skin from burning by either absorbing the harmful rays or reflecting them from the skin. No sunscreen can provide total protection from all of the sun's rays and that’s why it is always important to cover up using appropriate clothing and eye wear especially during the hottest part of the day.

What active ingredient does WOTNOT sunscreen use?
WOTNOT uses Zinc Oxide which reflects UV-A and UV-B rays rather than chemical actives which absorb these rays.

No chemical UV-absorbers are used in WOTNOT sunscreen as these can easily be absorbed into your body and your bloodstream. Medical studies have shown that some chemical UV absorbers have the potential to cause health problems, allergic dermatitis and photo-allergic dermatitis. These reactions do not occur with sunscreens containing zinc oxide.

What does broad spectrum mean and is it important?
A sunscreen that provides broad spectrum protection protects against UV-B rays as well as UV-A.  All sunscreens protect against UV-A rays which cause sunburn however not all protect again UV-B which causes premature ageing of the skin.

Recent studies have shown that UV-A radiation plays a large role in causing gene mutations that can lead to skin cancer.  Therefore it is vital that when using a sunscreen you check that it offers broad spectrum protection.

Is it safe to use on babies and people with sensitive skin?
Yes! Babies should be sheltered from the sun as much as possible. However when this isn't possible or for people with sensitive skin, our sunscreen is a great option.  As with any product, if you feel that you or your baby may be allergy prone then we recommend that you do a patch test before general use.

What is SPF and what protection does it give?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. SPF numbers are an approximate indication of how much protection from the sun the product will provide for your skin.  Skin starts to burn after 5 to 10 minutes in the sun. Sunscreen extends that time by a multiple of the SPF e.g if we use an average time of 8 minutes to burn without sunscreen then:

    * SPF30 sunscreens will protect for 30 x 8 minutes or 240 minutes (4 hours)
    * SPF15 sunscreens will protect for 15 x 8 minutes or 120 minutes (2 hours)

It is also important to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours or after towelling dry or excessive sweating.  This will not prolong the amount of time you can stay in the sun but will ensure the effectiveness of your sunscreen for the remaining time that your sunscreen provides protection.

How to use?
It is important to apply your sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going out in the sun.  This allows the sunscreen to reach each layer of the skin and provides maximum protection.

Reapply at regular intervals, after swimming, towelling dry or perspiring.  Sunscreen should be applied evenly and liberally to ensure all exposed areas are protected.

Shake well before use.  Avoid contact with eyes. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially at midday, and wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear.

FAQs about WOTNOT products:

Are WOTNOT products tested on animals?
No our products are proudly tested on humans!

Do WOTNOT products contain any animal ingredients?
WOTNOT products are free from animal extracts where possible. Our sunscreen includes beeswax to provide water resistance.

Are WOTNOT products safe to use on babies and people with sensitive skin?
Our products contain only natural and organic ingredients. However as with any product, if you feel that you or your baby may be allergy prone then we recommend that you do a patch test with any of our products before general use.

How do I remove stains from my clothes if I accidently get sunscreen or oil on them?
Our sunscreen is an all natural product and contains jojoba oil.  As with any sunscreen or oil this can leave a stain on some clothing.  You can use Sunlight Soap or Bicarbonate of Soda, both are natural and effective cleaning agents.  You can also use specialised oil stain removers or pressurised dry shampoo which are readily available from your supermarket.

What size are the zinc particles used in WOTNOT sunscreen?
We understand that raw materials can be broken down into smaller particles during the manufacturing process so for our own peace of mind we had our finished product independently tested.  Results from our testing show that the size of the zinc particles that sits on the skin is an average 10 microns (10µm) and are no smaller than 400nm which classifies them as micronized, not nano.
