    Some therapeutic benefits:
Hibiscus: A stunning member of the mallow family, this plant is perhaps best known for the beatiful blooms it produces annually. A popular addition to herbal teas it is actually the sepals (the segments that protect the petals in bud) that are used in tea blends. The sepals of this tropical shrub are renowned for their cooling effects and zingy taste and we harness this potential in our Harmonise and Refresh tea blends.

Fennel: With its distinctive yellow flowers, fennel is an aromatic herb that grows to heights of up to 2.5m. It is widely cultivated for its edible, strongly flavoured leaves and seeds. Fennel has long been respected for its soothing effect on the digestive system and is grown widely for its mouth-wateringly sweet seeds. With our sweet fennel coming from organic farms in Turkey it absorbs the dry inland warmth and creates an intensely high level of the most divine essential oils. We just love fennel for her ability to soothe even the grumpiest of tummies.

    Lemon: high vitamin C, antibacterial.

Lemon Balm: Otherwise known as balm mint, Lemon Balm is a close relative of Mint but with leaves that have a gentle lemon scent. Plants grow up to 150cm tall which in summer produce beautiful white flowers full of nectar for bees. The leaves have traditionally been used to keep mosquitoes at bay by rubbing them on the skin.

Lemon Myrtle: An evergreen tree, Lemon Myrtle is a native of the sub-tropical rainforests of South Eastern Australia and can grow up to 60 feet tall although it's often much smaller. It produces beautiful white flowers throughout the summer and into autumn and as with Lemon Balm, the leaves emit a delicious lemon scent when crushed or bruised.

Lemon Verbena: originates from South America and was originally brought to Europe to be cultivated for its vibrant and citrus smelling essential oil content.

Lemongrass: is a lemon-scented grass that grows that is said to have originated in Malaysia or the Philippines. As well as making use of its fresh, pungent flavour in soups, curries and stews, lemongrass can be used as a preservative and pesticide.

Licorice root: A great herb for moderating irritation as it is cooling, soothing and grounding. Great for digestion and specific for ulcers and intestinal inflammation.

Mandarin Orange: originated in China, and it was so prized that it was traditionally given as a Royal gift. Its oil is widely used in perfumery and as a flavouring.

Rosehips: These glistening, red hedgerow jewels are rich in vitamin C and have always been used by rural communities as a source of nutritious vitamins during the long winter months.

Store: In a cool, dry, dark cupboard.

Origin: UK with co-op farmers in India and Sri Lanka; Manufacturing in the UK is under tight restrictions in accordance with UK medicines standards.

Certification: Soil Association UK5, USDA, Kosher Pareve, Climate Care, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)

Sebastian Pole, our master tea blender, Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner, uses his extensive herbal knowledge and expertise to formulate the most flavoursome organic herbal teas, each with unique therapeutic properties to help balance your health.

All herbs can be traced back to the fields from where they were grown. Pukka Herbs source herbs directly from the independent farming co-operatives they help set up in India and Sri Lanka to ensure farmers are paid a fair wage (currently pay 50-200% above market rates for raw materials), and to ensure minimal impact on the environment and maximum benefit for the growers. Pukka Herbs works directly with over 500 families growing Ayurvedic herbs organically and plant over 1,000,000 plants and trees per year.

Pukka's herbal teas truly are pukka!
    We hope you enjoy them!

(Pukka is a Hindi word meaning ‘authentic’, ‘genuine’ or more colloquially ‘top quality’. It comes from the Sanskrit ‘pakwa’ and this sentiment of offering the best quality organic Ayurvedic herbs and service is what we at Pukka Herbs are all about.)

    Body-mind types:
In Ayurveda we are said to have body-mind types. These are known as dosha and consist of vata, pitta and kapha. Each dosha has certain attributes and describes our individual characteristics, inherited traits, our likes and dislikes and our tendencies. Generally we are a combination of doshas but one will usually dominate. If a dosha becomes out of balance, which can happen for a number of reasons, it can effect how we behave and even our health.
Typical characteristics of each dosha type:

Vata types tend to be visionary, imaginative and full of creative energy but when they are out of balance they can be forgetful, spaced out, anxious and uptight. Typical vata problems are erractic digestion, bloating, anxiety or joint disorders.

Pitta types are confident, passionate leaders, organised and perfectionists, but excess pitta can make them fiery, snappy and irritable. Pitta people have a tendency to suffer from skin irritations, overheating, heartburn and ulcers.

Kapha types tend to be loyal, kind-hearted, calm and full of love, but a kapha overload can make them lethargic, lacking in energy and a little overindulgent. Kapha types are prone to congestion, excess weight and sluggish digestion.
It’s important to try and keep our doshas in balance in order to stay in top form. It’s not always easy with the hectic lives we lead, but if we can learn what our body needs and adjust our lifestyle accordingly, it’s a big step closer to staying healthy and happy!
